Luke's Top Tips

In today's lesson Luke came to talk to us to give us various tips and tricks for a successful music video.
I took some rough notes throughout the lesson, which I have typed up below...

  • Remember you are promoting a new band, they have no fan base. Not an established artist.
  • Try to do less literal, more 'symbolic' sets - don't have the time to create a perfect, literal set i.e. a classroom.
  • Only cast professional people - i.e. an actual bass player to play the bass.
  • Pop video should have three strands and they should all have the same tone and colour palette. The three strands should all be both thematically and visually linked. Making sure there are 3 strands stops the video from getting boring. The strands have to have an arc - a movement, development.
  • Once you have the rushes back cut the performance base first
  • Don't try to create the video completely based on the lyrics - they're still important but the shots shouldn't completely revolve around them.
  • Difficult to do rap videos - especially with the Hurtwood demographic...makes accurate casting an issue.
  • Be MEMORABLE + distinctive.
  • Fairly simple in what it is doing
  • Make sure your lip syncer sings out loud when filming - will make it look more natural and realistic.

  1. Hi Molly

A reasonable effort on the blog this week, although I do think a couple of things are missing. Firstly, in the post above you have explained what you think the significant sections of Luke's advice were but have not explained whether/how any of it is significant to your own production ideas. Secondly there is no analysis of similar products on your blog from last week, when I know that you looked at several with your group. Try to make some notes and screenshots when you look at and discuss these as this will help form the basis of your posts, where you will be able to explain both what conventions of the genre you have identified and also how you are intending to or not to operate within these conventions in your own products. I look forward to seeing how your group move forwards with your concepts, distilling the essence of the artist's core 'meanings' or star image should help you think different ways in which to represent this visually... Good luck Phil
