Evaluation Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

THE SCRIPT For our thriller, An ideal audience member would be from a ‘western’ society as they are usually more interested in action films with violence, mystery, a hero figure etc. it is set in a rural England town thus might appeal more to those to live in similar areas, such as Sussex. Since the hero in our film is a woman and this is a countertype representation we would not want an overly traditional or  narrow minded audience, so we would be aiming for teenagers and young adults, those in their twenties and early thirties. An ideal audience member would have hobbies like playing sport, video games, cars, and would not typically enjoy films like romance or comedy, preferring action films, thrillers and horrors. Whilst these sound like quite masculine ideals, since the protagonist is a woman, we would also want women in the audience and think our film would attract them. Rough Notes for Evaluation Question 5

For evaluation task 5 - 'How did you attract/address your audience?' - I plan to record an audio file in order to answer the question. My group created this rough set of notes and from these notes we are each going to create our own script and record ourselves answering the question with this script : Identity : Strong female lead role. Aged - still be powerful, strong, skilled at an older age. So our thriller attracts an audience that may not otherwise have chosen to watch a thriller  -  stereotypically older people, specifically older women, may not necessarily watch thrillers as much as men/young men, so by having an older woman in a powerful role we are attracting another type of audience member.. Counter typical representation makes our film stand out, more interesting. Entertain : humour of ‘those were gucci u bastard’. Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

'Who would be the audience for your media product?' Sean, Vova and myself came up with various questions to ask people of different age groups in order to find out who the audience for our thriller would be. The above video is these interviews compiled together. Also, I created a fake Instagram account for our ideal audience member. He is 17 years old, enjoys films -  especially those of the action thriller genre -  plays sports, and has a fairly liberal set of values in that he is supportive of gender equality and thus would want to see a thriller with a woman in a powerful main role - this is shown by his Instagram account as he posted a photo supporting International Women's Day. Also, he posted a photo of the movie poster for 'Lucy', an action thriller that features a strong female lead, and stated that it is one of his favourite thrillers.

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product is the opening sequence of a fictional thriller film. It represents particular social groups through mise-en-scene, camera, editing and sound, most notably gender and regional identity. Our thriller opens on a kitchen where our female character, Piper, is chopping vegetables. It is clearly a kitchen because there is a sink, a microwave and a large kitchen table. This is a stereotypical representation of women as she is depicted as a housewife, cooking dinner for the family and this is an example of mise en scene creating a negative representation of gender. This representation is emphasised by the close up of her cutting up carrots : via GIPHY However this representation changes when the audience discovers that she has a gun in her kitchen drawer as there is a close up shot of her opening the drawer and taking the gun out. The camera also shows a close up on Piper’s face when the man on the other end of the phone call says ‘Shut up and listen. Your husband ...

FILMS Taken (2006) - In this film there is an iconic scene where the protagonist, Bryan Mills, has a phone conversation with the kidnappers of his daughter. The incorporation of the call adds a lot of tension and mystery to the scene, and inspired us to base our thriller around a phone call. A Stranger Calls (1979) -  In this film a man calls a babysitter repeatedly, telling her to check on the children. Widely regarded as one of the most tense, frightening movie openings of all time, the use of the telephone is key in creating the suspense and tension, which is what we wanted to recreate in our thriller. Scream (1996) - The film revolves around a serial killer who calls his victims and asks them questions like 'What's your favourite scary movie?' before killing them.
