Rough Notes for Evaluation Question 5

For evaluation task 5 - 'How did you attract/address your audience?' - I plan to record an audio file in order to answer the question.

My group created this rough set of notes and from these notes we are each going to create our own script and record ourselves answering the question with this script :

  • Identity : Strong female lead role. Aged - still be powerful, strong, skilled at an older age. So our thriller attracts an audience that may not otherwise have chosen to watch a thriller  -  stereotypically older people, specifically older women, may not necessarily watch thrillers as much as men/young men, so by having an older woman in a powerful role we are attracting another type of audience member.. Counter typical representation makes our film stand out, more interesting.
  • Entertain : humour of ‘those were gucci u bastard’. Secret spy, gun in her cutlery drawer - showing an exciting, dramatic lifestyle that is unlike most people’s lives so provides a sense of escapism.
  • Social interaction : Female lead role could spark debate ( counter typical)

Genre : Action thriller / thriller. Taken was an influential film - kidnapping (family relation) and scary, threatening phone call that introduces his impressive skill set.        Also influenced by Scream - phone call (iconic)

SETTING
Kitchen  - realistic setting, everyone has one, relatable
Basement - typical thriller setting - appeal to fans of that genre

THE STORY
Employs thriller conventions - eg good vs evil, kidnapping, gun, ransom. - YET turns them on their head - old female - making it more interesting.

Characters
  • Adam , aggressive, mysterious, fills conventions of this male villain character. However he uses humour which gives his character another dimension.
  • Claire, conventional plot device in that she has been ‘out of the game’ and Adam is luring her back in, idea of a retired agent making a comeback, AS IN THE Retired and Extremely Dangerous FRANCHISE (retired CIA agents). Flips the stereotypical ‘damsel in distress’ character on its head, widens the appeal / attracts a wider audience.

Narrative devices
  • Phone call - increases tension/suspense and mystery (as evidenced in scream/ when a stranger calls) also is a phone call is an ordinary, relatable event - everyone makes phone calls. Increases fear - it could happen to me!
  • Don’t show villains face until the end - mystery and keeps the audience engaged

SOCIAL GROUPS
Adam - liverpudlian accent.
Clare - south western england accent
We’re representing a variety of people/addressing different regional identities.
Kitchen is middle class but not overly grand.

MUSIC
  • Crescendo at the end to add to the ‘climax’ of the scene and add to drama and tension.
  • Style : Industrial. Without words - our friend created an original soundtrack for us that was customised to our intentions.
TITLES
  • Main actor’s name (adam grant) is the third title  - we want people to watch our thriller FOR adam.

EDITING

  • Fast pace, quick cuts - conventional editing technique in thrillers, appealing to the audience at thriller films.
  • Effects : gun shot effect - shooting is a typical device used in thrillers.
