Shoot day

On Tuesday 17th January we filmed our thriller sequence. We filmed the basement clips in the morning and then after lunch we filmed the rest, which was set in the kitchen. Altogether, it took us around 5 hours.
Our cast was comprised of Adam Grant as Erik, Lee Johnson as John, Monty Taylor and Hugo Field as the Henchmen and Clare Mutzenich as Piper.
Overall I think it was a very successful day. We managed to work efficiently and carefully as a group, getting all the filming done in a shorter time frame than I expected.

We made sure to get a good variety of shots from different angles, including wide, midshot, close ups    etc.

We started the day by meeting with the actors at Ewhurst. First, we had to clear the basement because there were various things that were being stored in there. In order to not waste any time, we assigned some people to clear the room whilst others set up the lights and cameras. Next, we blocked the scene without recording it in order to give the actors some practice and to make sure that everyone was in frame.

It took two and a half hours to do all the Basement takes. The most challenging part of the sequence to film was the shot of Lee, the actor playing John, spitting fake blood onto Adam's shoes after being punched. We had to do quite a few retakes to make sure that we got the perfect shot of the blood hitting the shoe.

Myself, Sean and Vova took turns filming, recording the audio, and directing.
We made sure to get recordings of the static sound of the room to add in when editing.

After lunch, we went back to Ewhurst to film the other side of the telephone conversation. This time we filmed in the kitchen. In this part of the sequence, Piper is making dinner and is interrupted by a call from Erik, from her husband's phone. Because we were filming in the student kitchen in the boarding house, we had to change the room slightly to make it look like a realistic family kitchen. We removed the industrial size tea and coffee jars, and put some flowers on the table. We set up the table with the vegetables and chopping board whilst Katie and Tom were setting up the equipment. The whole process went very smoothly and we made sure to get plenty of shot types and angles.
We started with a wide shot and added close ups of the chopping, of Clare washing her hands and of her getting a gun out of the drawer and loading it, as well as a mid shot of her at the table.

The story is meant to take place at 5pm so we made sure to change the time of the clock and removed the battery so that it stayed at the same time throughout to ensure continuity. We created a realistic soft dusky light in the kitchen by closing all the curtains and adjusting the studio lights. Again, it took around two hours for us to finish filming the conversation. We made sure that we had a good variety of shot types and angles.
I think that the reason the shoot went so well was that we prepared thoroughly beforehand. The shot list we had made really helped to organise our filming and we had all the props that were required. Sharing and swapping the different roles between the three group members was also crucial as it meant that everyone had input.
